Think it’s tough going up against a dozen other applicants for your dream job? How about 2.3 million?

The Uttar Pradesh state government, located in northern India, advertised a job and received that many applications in September, the Financial Times reported. The online ad offered 368 junior posts for employees who tidy up, bring tea to officials or act as night guards. The monthly starting salary is $240 (about 15,600 rupees), which is above the World Bank estimate of India’s average per-capita monthly income of 8,785 rupees ($135).

EU states have struck an action plan for Turkey that it is hoped will ease the flow of migrants to Europe.

Nearly 600,000 migrants have reached the EU by sea so far this year, many of them travelling from Turkey to Greece before seeking to head north.

Turkey made a number of demands in exchange for helping to stem the flow.

In a press conference in Brussels, Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, said he felt "cautious optimism" over the deal.

Nato has urged Russia to end air strikes "on the Syrian opposition and civilians", days after Moscow began raids to support Syria's government.

Moscow says it is targeting Islamic State and other Islamist positions, but US-led allies and Turkey say government opponents are targeted.

Turkish F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after a Russian plane entered Turkey's air space on Saturday.

Some beauty salons are continuing to provide illegal teeth whitening despite being prosecuted by regulators.

The British Dental Association (BDA) says whitening is perfectly safe if carried out by a registered dental professional. But the BDA warns anyone else won't have the right training or knowledge and could cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums. For example, if the mouthguard containing the bleaching gel does not fit properly some of it may leak and cause painful chemical burns. In extreme cases, people have been sick after swallowing the bleaching product.

Growth in China's investment and factory output in August has come in below forecasts, in a further indication that the world's second-largest economy is losing steam.

Other indications that the economy is weakening can be seen in falling car sales and lower imports and inflation.

Chinese manufacturers cut prices at their fastest pace in six years, largely on the back of a drop in commodity prices, which have dropped sharply over the past year as demand from China faltered.

A Greek minister said on Monday Lesbos was "on the verge of an explosion".
The Greek government and the UN refugee agency have brought in extra staff and ships to deal with some 25,000 stranded migrants on the island of Lesbos.
A processing centre has been also set up on an abandoned football ground to help the migrants to get to Athens.
